Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation can add fullness to the breasts, improve breast symmetry or bring the breasts into better proportion with the rest of the body. For many patients, the procedure can bring more than just a change to the body, leading to a boost in confidence and self-esteem. Volume is added to the breasts through the use of implants. You will discuss the amount of increase you desire with Dr. Kendall during your consultation. If your breasts are sagging, your augmentation may be performed in conjunction with a breast lift.

Are breast implants safe?

Dr. Kendall uses two kinds of implants, depending on what is best for the patient. One type is filled with a saline solution that is not harmful to the patient in the unlikely even that an implant should rupture. The solution is absorbed by the body. We also use silicon gel implants, which were approved by the FDA in 2006. The silicon gel in these implants is a polymer that behaves like a solid, so in the event of a rupture, it will not enter the body. Ruptures are exceedingly rare, but should one occur, the manufacturer will nearly always provide a replacement and help cover the costs of replacement surgery.

There is no scientific evidence that breast augmentation increases the risk of breast cancer. The presence of breast implants, however, does make taking and reading mammograms more difficult. Women with high risk factors for breast cancer, such as family history, may want to consider this. Several factors must be considered when determining where to place the implant, and certain placements will interfere less with a mammogram.

It is important to discuss any family history of breast cancer or any breast biopsies you have had with Dr. Kendall in full so that he can consider all factors before making a recommendation.

Will my breasts look and feel natural after the implants are in place?

Your breasts should look and feel quite natural after surgery. Dr. Kendall uses the latest techniques to minimize scarring and achieve a natural, balanced look. Your breasts will likely feel firmer, but remember that the implant will sit behind your natural breast tissue, and there will not be a significant difference in texture once the recovery period is complete.

What is the recovery like?

Breast augmentation is usually performed on an outpatient basis, and you will most likely spend a few hours at the surgery facility after the procedure for monitoring. You will receive pain medication to minimize post-operative discomfort. Your breasts will be wrapped in gauze or a special surgical bra.

You should arrange to have a trusted friend or loved one available to bring you home. You should be up and about in a day or two. Dressings should be removed a few days after the procedure, and you will be given a support bra. During this first follow-up appointment, Dr. Kendall will tell you how long you should continue to wear this bra, as well as when you may begin to shower again, which is typically four days to a week after surgery. This varies from patient to patient. Most patients will have their sutures removed roughly a week after surgery.

Depending on your occupation, you may be allowed to return to work within a few days, though patients with physically demanding jobs—especially jobs involving use of the arms—may be told to stay home longer. Generally speaking, vigorous activity should be avoided for two to three weeks. Sexual activity should be avoided for at least one week, and special care must be taken to be very gentle with your breasts after that.

There will be a small amount of swelling and discoloration initially, but this should not last long. Initial discomfort can be addressed with the recommended pain medications, but extreme pain should be reported to Dr. Kendall’s office immediately.

Be sure to follow the instructions you receive before your procedure closely in order to avoid harming yourself and achieve the best possible result.

Your breast augmentation outcome will take a few weeks or months to become final. Do not be discouraged if your early results are not what you had hoped for. The results should last for years to come, though every woman’s breasts will be affected by gravity over time.
