The objective of external ear surgery (otoplasty) is typically to set prominent or flared ears closer to the head or to reduce the size of overly large ears. Though this procedure is most commonly performed on children, many adults who desire more proportional ears choose to have the procedure as well. It is generally performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia, though for very young children, general anesthesia may be recommended.
Anesthesia: Local for most adults, General for most children
What is the recovery like?
Otoplasty is usually performed on an outpatient basis, and you will most likely spend some time at the surgery facility after the procedure for monitoring. You will receive pain medication to minimize post-operative discomfort. If your child is having the procedure, you will be allowed to be with him or her in the post-operative recovery area.
You should arrange to have a trusted friend or loved one available to bring you home. You should be up and about the following day. Dressings should be removed a few days after the procedure. During this first follow-up appointment, Dr. Kendall will tell you when you may begin to wash the area around the ears in the shower again, which is typically several days after surgery. This varies from patient to patient.
Depending on your occupation, you may be allowed to return to work within a few days, though patients with physically demanding jobs may be told to stay home longer. Generally speaking, vigorous activity should be avoided for two to three weeks. This applies to children as well, and it should be made clear to your child before the procedure that this is the case. It is best to schedule the procedure when your child is out of school during the summer.
There may be a small amount of swelling and discoloration initially, but this should not last long. Initial discomfort can be addressed with the recommended pain medications, but extreme pain should be reported to Dr. Kendall’s office immediately.
Be sure to follow the instructions you receive before your procedure closely in order to avoid harming yourself and achieve the best possible result.
Your otoplasty outcome should be permanent.
